Artist´s Statement

Marie-Therese Heublein

In my practice I explore the changes in ones sense of self by the exposure to the digital. Central to my work is the notion of the in-between that surfaces as a dynamic equilibrium between the figure and its abstraction. By morphing our digital and physical modes of existing the body becomes limitless and material of experimentation. In this state of digital dualism there are no natural limits and no natural dynamics just the in-between of our contemporary existence.

I engage with the interconnections of digital and analogue processes, digital modelling applied in AR and traditional oil painting on canvas. Influenced by the spiralling portrayal of pathos in the Baroque and the encounter of hyperrealistic and transformative virtual environments, I question our linear understanding of space and time and animate the thought of multiple dimensions contained in our perceived reality. I examine the new states the body can assume in these mixed environments and imagine otherworldly spaces of bendable time and transformable space that can be tuned and adjusted or in which the body is tuned, adjusted and consumed. In my latest work I explore new possibilities of expanding the boundaries in which a painting can be experienced by extending it with the additional layer of an AR environment that seemingly envelops and immerses the viewer physically in the liminal space of the in-between.

My paintings reflect on the feeling of disembodiment and displacement that develops from the unpredictability of being torn between the two parallel spaces. A glitch occurs when elements collide that should not or cannot physically exist together in the real world. The glitch body, the fracture of space and the fluidity of shapes are recurring elements in my work that act as indicators of the dissolving and rebuilding of our own identities. We are becoming multiple and redefine our relationship towards the organic nature.
